DEFINITION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF PERSONALITY


personality is totally of one's inner and outer  behaviour towards oneself and others as well

It includes everything about the person his physical, emotional, social, mental and spiritual makeup.

The word personality derived from the latin word "persona" which means mask, used by actors in theatre.


HERE ARE SOME DEFINITIONS BY OUR FAMOUS PSYCHOLOGISTS.


  •  According to watson, personality is the sum of activities that can be discovered by actual observation over a long period of time to give reliable information.
  •  According to gordon allport, personality is a dynamic organization within the individual, of those psychophysical system that determines his unique adjustment to his enviornment.
  •  Raymond cattell, personality is that which permits a production of what a person will do in a given situation.
  •  Eysenck, personality is the more or less stable and enduring organization of a person's character, temperament, intellect and physique which determine his unique adjustment to the enviornment.

 It includes all the behaviour patterns i.e. conative, cognitive affective and cover not only the conscious activities but goes deeper to subconscious and unconscious too.

CHARACTERISTICS OF PERSONALITY. 



  •  It is a dynamic whole. it is not static but active.
  •  Personality measures behaviour - internal and external both.
  •  Personality is always in the process of change and modification.
  • Every personality is the product of heredity and enviornment.
  • Personality is self consciousness.
  •  Learning and aquisition of experiences contributes toward growth and development of personality.. 
  • It is the most characteristics integration of individual structure, modes of behaviour, interests, abilities and aptitudes.
  • Personality functions as a unified whole.
  • It is unique and specific.
